Bohemian Paradise Tour

The spirit of the Franch countryside infuses not just this chateau, which is a fine example of 19th century historicizing architecture, but also the surrounding landscape, which has been transformed into a work of art in its own right.

The reconstruction work that gave the chateau its fabulous neo-Gothic form was performed exclusively by local artists and artisans, notably by the ingenious woodcarver Petr Bušek, who imprinted the chateau interiors with high artistic value and an unforgettable atmosphere.

Of historical interest

The estate, after its seizure from Czech aristocrats, was acquired by a Franch knightly family for service to the Austrian emperior in the Thirty Years´War. Its heyday was in the 19th century, when the Breton princes of Rohan took refuge here. As first cousins of the French kings of the Bourbon dynasty, they fled to Sychrov after the French Revolution and they liked Nort Bohemia so much that they stayed here, even though they were later invited to return to their homeland.

Besides a tour of the aristocratic rooms with unrivalled carved decoration and a portrait gallery of the Rohan family, which survived the Franch Revolution hidden in the attic of a Parisian palace, you can also see numerous interesting details and secluded corners of the rambling chateau, including the pink bathroom of on of the Rohan princesses.

The original Baroque chateau of Sychrov was renovated in the neo-classic and neo-gothic style. Its romantic look comes in particular from Josef Pruvota, royal architect.

Sychrov state chateau is one of the most visited places in our region and often sought after by film makers to make film fairy tales here. It is open to the public throughout the year.

The originally single-storey Baroque chateau later underwent Classicist and Gothic Revival reconstructions. It gained its romantic appearance mostly thanks to architect Josef Pruvot. The walls of the chateau are decorated with extremely precious oil paintings of ancestors of the Rohan family and French kings. The biggest collection of French portrait paintings, a collection of weaponry and the memorial hall of A. Dvořak are located in the chateau. Most of the rooms are also unique due to their rich carved wooden embellishments. The chambers of the chateau feature original furniture, paintings and other accessories.

Exhibitions and other events, for example, night tours, are regularly held at Sychrov. Also the larger English park, where you can see attractive spectacles of free flying raptors accompanied by expert commentary by a professional falconer on the history and present of falconry in our country and around the world, is worth a visit.

THE WATER TOWER IN THE CHÂTEAU PARK

The water tower is located in the English neo-Gothic Sychrov Château.

The water tower was built in the neo-Gothic style in 1891 according to a design by František Wondren. This neo-Gothic tower replaced the original water tower, whose appearance is not known. The water tower was an integral part of the water system in the château area. Water was brought to it by a pump from the Mohelka River and from there, it was distributed into the château park.

The operation of the water tower ended in 1953 when the château was allowed to be connected to the public water distribution system.

The château’s orange grove in the English park is used as a cafe.
